Young Does On Our Farm

Often, on my walks around our farm , I come upon wildlife that share our woods. These young deer were grazing on a patch of green that grows in our over grown woods. I've captured them in charcoal.... maybe to paint at some future point.

Looser than most of my work, this painting is done in charcoal, acrylic, casein and oil. I pushed into an abstract background

portraying a gray pushing his limits. I'm guilty of doing just that at times.... pushing my limits.

Left Behind

In the winter , while on a walk with my JRT Nell, we came upon this robin's nest that lay on the cold snow. One blue egg, left behind for some unknown reason, lie still in the nest, unbroken. I carefully carried it and its nest back to my studio. I love doing paintings of different nests, and I loved how this nest had the terre vert colored moss woven into its beautiful structure. I will always wonder why this egg never hatched and why the nest fell where Nell and I saw it...as if it was meant to be.

 

It's a nice break from rendering horses....to set up my own still life images .....and to get lost in the image.

Scavenger's Spoils

  Two robin eggs were left after the farm birds had started thinking about leaving for the warmer south, as summer announced it departure last year.  I kept the nest and the forgotten eggs in the studio, planning on future still life works. It has taken me this long to 'get my act together'.

New eggs have been started since this years arrival of our farm's robins. Life goes on. A new summer has just started too, along with all the promises it brings. Something old. Something new.  "Scavenger's Spoils"

 

I AM Going Somewhere

This past winter I started exploring my abstract creative side. It has proven to be an exciting foray. I’ve kept the initial start of my abstraction, as an intuitive step forward, onto a blank canvas. I'm working with acrylics and casein. Then I go in with my charcoals to draw the main subject, which I approach with more realism. I have always loved drawing….and my work, in the past, has been more impressionistic realism, but I have always been drawn [no pun intended] to abstract work and the use of pure color to drive intent and exploration. I think I will always have to have an element of realism in my work, but will continue dropping my subject into an abstract landscape, as I paint, splatter and drag color intuitively across the canvas. I hope you are enjoying my new work……and seeing where my journey takes me.

“Where Ever You Shall Go...” is done in mixed media [acrylic, casein, oil and ink]. Two draft horses walked away from me….walking into the abstracted landscape ….a path that draws them into a lovely light that hints of sunlight and trees standing tall. A tall Clydesdale follows the shorter more stocky spotted draft horse…where ever it may go……just as I seem to be following my muse, where ever it shall take me.

 

 I am pleased to announce that "Where Ever You Shall Go" as been juried into the "Artist's Choice Exhibit at River Arts Gallery in Damariscotta, Maine , with an opening reception to be held Friday, May 5th at 5 until 7:00 pm. Hope to see you there!

 

 

Watercolor Coaching Study

I have always loved the protocol and tradition of coaching. There is an excitement of a team of four horses pulling a coach with passengers dressed in proper attire , and with the bugler sounding the arrival or departure of the coach..... How wonderful.

The reference for this work was provided by friend and photographer Sarah Seaman.....thank you Sarah! I am sure I will do an actual larger finished painting of this beautiful scene.

Heading Towards Spring

  I  finished "Heading Towards Spring" a bit ago.  This is my first foray into the use of Dura-la drafting film as a substrate and I WILL be doing more. I'm very excited about using this archival , non tearing drafting film as a new substrate in my artistic repertoire. It is good to add to one's artistic skills and this move proves to be a good stretch. Stay tuned!

The Pears Are Ready

Each year we wait for the fall's harvest of fruit. Our pears are a favorite. We have a basket sitting on our kitchen counter for everyone to enjoy....and then there is a bag for the horses' enjoyment in the barn. We are happy when the pears are ready!

Fall sure feels close. The warm sun filled days have a melancholy touch and each evening brings cooler temps that makes me want to curl up with a warm cozy blanket. These are the days I love.  And my studio is calling me back to get busy on new work....my gardens are slowing down. It is time.

This is the time of the year when Maine is beautiful! Sun shines most days and along the coast a cooling breeze blows amking the summer days sing. This is the time most of us , in Maine, wait for all winter. And for my husband and I, this is the time of year we head up to Acadia with our horses to enjoy the wonder that is Acadia. Ocean, forest, fresh air and carriage roads.

This small study of a painting is portrays the beauty of Maine. A wonderful small reminder of that beauty.

Robin's Egg Blue And A Luna Moth

There are so many Robin families living on our small farm. I guess they like the multitude of worms that dig in our soil.One lone egg was in this nest.....others came after. But I had to paint that lonely one "Robin's Egg Blue".

 

And several days ago we were again visited by a Luna Moth. Each year they come....and each year they intrigue me with their design. Very Klimt-ish. They come attracted by the back door light I keep on at night in an attempt to keep deer out of my studio garden and our vegetable garden. It doesn't seem to work. But it does seem to invite the Luna's to our farm. "Night Visitor" is available on my website as is "Robin's Egg Blue".

Les and I have been driving our horses. It is that time of year where we get to do what we love....and horses are a big part of it. I won't get much studio time over the next few months, what with gardening and driving....but that's good. I always come back with new ideas and my creative juices flowing. A vacation of sorts to keep my brain working.

Poppies

My gardens and their bounty have captured my attention of late. I spend hours weeding and thinning plants and yet it seems that the weeds and new sprouts spring up behind my back, as I work my way around each flower bed. Well, it is called Spring ....Isn't it?

 

Spring poppies are always a favourite of mine to depict. Here are my "Poppies".

Sea Holly and Alpaca Sketches

"Sea Holly" is one of the perennials growing in my gardens. I love its spikey presence. I explored their personality in charcoal...I know now I have to paint them. Their design element is strong as they stand out in the garden. But I need to capture their lovely incandescent blue....a color that stands out in  a sea of green, Their spikey flower heads and spikey leaves ask to be touched, experienced when one walks the garden paths. I am waiting now on their growth in the front garden. I think I want to try capturing them plein air....painting in the garden. I want to do more of that this summer, as time permits.

Another sketch done recently was prompted by a visit to a friend's farm one cold, very wet spring day. I was photographing spring lambs when two inquisitive resident alpacas came to check what the strangers were doing in their lambing barn. What intelligent soulful eyes the alpacas have.  Their hair coats were soaking wet, but they looked huggable. This sketch is also available on my website. I am fascinated by alpacas now!

 

In a couple of weeks we are headed to Acadia with our Morgan pair. I don't know how much painting time I will be able to squeeze during our 'driving marathon". I'll do my best.  I can't wait to drive the carriage roads of Acadia again. I'll be taking lots of pictures for sure, for future paintings!

 A dragonfly stopped his flight and lit on a gate on our farm. He had been very busy catching flies.....maybe he was tired.

I appreciate all our dragonflies do for us on our farm. They are always so busy.

Promise Of Spring

 Under the eaves of our barn's run-out sheds, robins have taken up housekeeping. Their nests line the eaves and soon the eaves will be nurseries for baby robins. The parents' comings and goings are watched by our horses, as they rest in their stalls.

Spring is a busy time on the farm.

Floral Series, So Far

 

Time seems to flies these days. I have been working in the studio all day, but have been very neglect ibex of posting and blogging about my new work. I think that the last time I sent out an email newsletter was last fall … yes fall of 2015. At least I can not be accuses of filling your email boxes with spam !! But I do need to apologize for not getting my latest works out there for those who are interested in my art … and I know there are some of you out there in cyber world who are collectors and following my work.

I have been painting,drawing and creating new works in new media and stretching my creative repertoire. I have started a series of floral work  in charcoal, conte and gouache. So far works are on paper. I plan on using other substrates and mediums as I see where I can go with this series.

I started with portraying my spent bee balm seed stalks, as they stand after our old Maine winter.  I am enjoying this working series.… with 5 done so far. I am starting to do another subjects too. Working in a  series as always been a favorite way of working for me. It is as if one finished work pushes me onto the next… all connected , all different. Here are the works so far. Old Family Relics And New Oil Paintings

As I get older....and it seems to be happening too quickly these days,.....I find I am cherishing the bits and pieces of our family relics that we have around our small home. And feeling a need to capture some still life paintings , I set up a makeshift shadow box to set up my still life arrangements. Not fancy…..a background cloth to bounce light onto the subject ….and set about doing “Paint and Patina”, depicting two objects that have meaning for me, and hopefully to someone else.....my grandmother’s old teapot that age has graced with a lovely patina [ along with old dings and bumps] and my old painting knife that has been with me since my painting days in Italy. Two old well worn objects painted by a rather 'time worn' artist.  This is the first of many still life works.

So I paint.

Time Gone With The Wind In Winter - More Paintings

I can’t believe that it has been a month since I blogged last. My only excuse, and a very valid one, is that we have been inundated with snow and frigid weather that leaves me tired and taciturn….not very talkative. I have been painting some…not nearly as much and I wanted to this winter. I usually find more studio time in the winter months. This year has been different by all stretches of the imagination. Buried in snow, I have just been too tired to create, my muses are snow bound.

I did get asked to do a radio interview! I almost declined in invitation, but was convinced I could do it by my husband. So     I had a podcast radio interview with Driving Radio Show. It actually turned to be fun, and I was quickly put at ease by hosts Glenn and Wendy. I finished a commission for a client, of a Maine osprey and sticky nest. [See above.] In between storms I got it packaged and shipped out. It seems as if life this winter has been about getting things done between storms. So be it! This painting is 16 x 16” in casein on a panel. I enjoyed this size panel and have some new works in this size.

I also have completed a casein painting on paper, where I was sort of day dreaming about sun and warmth on a hot summer’s day. “One Summer’s Day” depicts a handsome gray in sun and little shadow.  A stretch when the temperature outside is below zero with a wind chill factor on top of that to numb your senses.

YET I am enjoying the play of sun and shadows on the snow with amble chance to appreciate it on our sunny days. This prompted another painting of Nell, in the snow, casting her Jack Russell shadow on new fallen snow. It is a small work, 6 x 6”, done in oil and is available.

This exhibition has work in many mediums that address the theme of “ My Community ”.  Artists were encouraged to take the theme of  “My Community”  broadly – family, friends, activities; neighborhoods, gatherings, things that bring us together,  community of present, past or imagined. I had 3 works juried into this exhibit.
