Heaven Help Me, But It's Winter In Maine

It has warmed up to a chilly 12°F outside of our cottage. It was 2 degrees this morning when I got up. I am dressed in an undershirt, a turtleneck, an alpaca sweater and heavy weight jeans.  Then I add a Polartec jacket under my down jacket,with snow pants to cover my jeans, then I go down to the barn to do chores. God help me if I slip and fall. I would never be able to get back up again. I would just lie there until spring came. Or maybe I could take a selfie of myself ( as I always carry my phone) and send it to Facebook and show everyone a picture of me, …the last picture of me before I died of frostbite on my way down to the barn .

Our Christmas celebration has come and gone. We had a great time with our family, all together with presents galore.

I hope you had a wonderful day too.  Our fields are free of their snow blanket and our horses think spring has come.

But it is not even New Years eve yet.............

Here's wishing everyone a wonderful New Year with peace and plenty for everyone.

I am back in my studio each day now, working on commission work,

and I am hopeful that I will be finding time for new original works too.

Work Published .....Again

A page from the new book written by Lynda McCann, illustrated by me.

Years ago I worked as the advertising manager for a Maine Equine publication,  The Horses Maine . I also illustrated its monthly story that was written by Lynda McCann, the  paper's editor. The stories were about an adventurous welsh pony called Tink, a Jack Russell Terrier named Frado, and a whole array of barn yard characters...a fun bunch to draw and to capture their personalities. I looked forward to each episode,as did the readers of the monthly equine newspaper. I stopped illustrating the stories when I went full-time into my painting career.Lynda continued writing the stories that went unillustrated over the years. Last winter Lynda told me she was going to start publishing the stories in book form. We decided some of the old illustrations should be used....And Lynda's book is now out and available... just in time for Chistmas gift giving to young horse crazy kids everywhere. Go Tink!!! Go Frado!!!

I must admit Frado looks a bit like our own JRT, Nellie......I guess Nellie came to our house for a reason!!
And even though the persona of Tink was based on a welsh pony from North Yarmouth, Maine...
at the time that I was illustrating Lynda's stories, we had a handsome welsh pony named "Frolic" , who was loved by our granddaughter,Jackie. It made my job so much easier having the characters right there to draw from! The drawings in the new book were done years ago...but still work today! I have new work in the making now...a watercolor begging to be done and I am back into a LARGE casein on canvas of three draft horses ,that was supposed to have been  a "work in progress" example, when I got waylaid and running off into another direction! Easily done these days!

New Painting In The Ring

In spite of the distractions of the hint of spring in the air and the gardens needing raking, horses needing shedding and dogs needing walking.....AND the fact that my studio space is STILL neither here nor there....I have finished a 12 x 12 casein and acrylic painting of a gray dressage horse titled" In The Ring". 

I also have received the exciting news that my oil painting "Four-Up At Acadia" is to be exhibited in an invitational art show ,  "The Horse In Fine Art  'A Salute to the World Equestrian Games' " which will hang in The Lexington History Museum in Lexington,Kentucky during the summer equestrian games.The exhibit is organized by The American Academy Of Equine Art in partnership with Keeneland Foundation and will be on display from April 16 through November 1,2010. I will probably not get down to the Lexington History Museum show until September when I will having a show opening and reception at Gallery B..also in Lexington and on the same street!!
