Burro In Harness

Long Ears have always fascinated me since I was a child.  I have had ponies, horses. ..big and small over the years. .... Yet I have never had a burro, donkey or ass. I remember the sweet burros that were pulling brightly colored carts on the Canary Islands and Sicily on my first voyage to Europe. This burro was from a locale closer to where I live now. This cute fellow is an American 'Equus Asinus'.....and he is a fine subject.

 

This mixed media work is done in charcoal, conte and gouache on Strathmore Gray Scale paper. This work is available through Equis Art Gallery in Red Hook, NY.

Looking Homeward

The image for this painting started as a graphite sketch in my moleskin sketchbook. I kept looking at my sketch and the image of the chestnut horse looking into the distance...[ looking into his future? ] and it kept saying paint this. The landscape was not so important in the scheme of the composition. The sky was as important an element, for me, as the subject himself. I used my palette knife mostly in the painting of the sky and the landscape. The pensive horse was painted with brush and more detailed, but with a bit of knife work in his mane.  

 

I enjoyed looking at this painting as it stood in my studio on my easel. I enjoyed painting it. And I was very happy when one of the galleries I am with, asked to have it in their gallery after seeing it on my website and my Facebook page. I was changing out work with Equis Art Gallery and agreed to send it down with new work that they wanted.  I explained that it was just dry enough to ship.....and would be send down unframed. They agreed to that. So off "Looking Homeward" went to New York. And then I was pleasantly surprised to heard from Equis Art Gallery that THAT painting had sold as soon as it arrived in the gallery.......a half hour after it had been unpacked. I thank Equis Art Gallery and owner Juliet Harrison. I know that pensive chestnut horse is in a good home where he will be taken care of and loved. That is what I want for all "my horses".

Pemaquid Point Oil Painting And A Two Person Art Show Coming Up!!

Maine is a beautiful state any time of the year. Even though our summer is pushing its way through the sweet cool months of spring, I remember scenes of our beautiful state that I want to paint. …..scenes-to capture that I have wanted to paint all winter, yet I was busy painting horses.

We took some friends down to Pemaquid Point Light House on their visit to Maine last fall. There was so much “eye candy” there that caught my eye. One of the subjects that really entranced me was the Rose-hips dotting the seaside landscape. The reddish orange rose hips against the White House and lighthouse begged to be painting. I recently finished painting that scene, capturing it oil. “Pemaquid Rose Hips” is available now on my website, on my ‘Not Equestrian Work” collection page.

Right now, my gardens are getting a much needed drink from Mother Nature. The rain falls and the thirsty earth is drinking its fill here in Maine. I wish I could send some of this rain to other parts of this earth where rain is so much needed. Our grass is growing like gangbusters and I am afraid weeds are too. I know where I will be once this rain spell passes. You should look for me in our gardens.

 

Shipping was on my plate this last week. I shipped works down to Equis Art Gallery, in Red Hook, NY, where I will be having my work hung in a two “man” show, along with fellow artist Patricia Powers. I will post more about this as it gets closer, but I am honored to be invited to be in this show in this summer!

I do have new work; I am working on as I try to get some ideas done before we start carriage driving our Ginger Boys every day. When we start doing that you won’t find me so often in the studio. Until then ………..I will paint!

New Mixed Media Figurative Painting While Fall Starts It's Glow Outside

The days are shorter. The weather has been wonderful with crisp fall mornings that beckon me to start the day full of fall colors and sounds….. Leaves that crunch underfoot, crows cawing from tall spruce. I love it.

The fall weather brought visits from artist friends and my family. The owner of Equis Art Gallery and her husband came to pick up new work from me, and we got to enjoy days of touring Maine. I carried my camera and have reference photos of iconic Maine landscapes to keep me busy all winter as I work on my new body of work.

I feel a need to do more figurative work. I have started using our grandchildren as subjects. I hope they don’t mind!! “Enlightened” is a new mixed media work [casein, gold leaf and languid gold]. It is on canvas and is sized 18 X 18”. It was a fun painting to do and took me quite a while to do between company visits. This painting has been juried into the River Arts art show “Faces & Figures” that opens Oct 10th in Damariscotta, Maine.Hope you can make the show! There is some neat work hanging in this exhibit.

I have 2 paintings in the works now. I can’t wait to show them!

News ..I Am Added To A New Art Gallery In Red Hook, N.Y.

2014 started with a weather pattern that is more or less erratic. But I don’t think I am telling you something you aren’t aware of. With an ice storm that left us without power…or heat... in below freezing temperatures ,  our farm is covered with a coating of ice which is making it hard to walk ...but oh so easy to slide…often unintentionally. So I walk carefully into the New Year with cleats on my winter boots and trying to grab time in the studio.  The cold weather means more work on the farm and less artistic time for me.

The good news is that I have been invited into a new art gallery in Red Hook, NY. So this week I packaged up 7 paintings to go to Equis Art Gallery, in Red Hook…..and I look forward to a great working relationship with them. This gallery that is representing some of the best international equine artists, and it is the dream incarnate of equine photographer Juliet Harrison. How appropriate that her "stable of artists" includes some amazing equine artists! I am so flattered to be part of that dream.

 One of my works that will be exhibited in Equis Art Gallery is my casein painting “Four In Hand From Above”, a painting that was inspired from a loft view of a coaching turnout that was up at Acadia’s Wildwood Stables years ago. I am always inspired to paint carriage driving scenes and the lofty view of any subject is also a view I have painted throughout the years. Equis Art Gallery is interested in my carriage driving art work. I will strive to create some more works with just that subject.
